AI Voice Calls
AI-Generated Voice Calls and Consumer Protection
In 2024 the FCC confirmed that calls using AI-generated voices are artificial voices under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. That means an AI voice bot placing a marketing call is subject to the same consent requirements as a traditional prerecorded message.
We evaluate claims from consumers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Matters are pursued in federal and state courts, including through association with qualified local counsel or pro hac vice admission where required.
Your situation may qualify if…
- The voice sounded human but responded oddly or repeated itself
- The caller would not confirm whether you were speaking to a person
- The call promoted a product or service
- You never gave written consent to be called
These are screening indicators only. They do not determine whether a claim exists, which depends on the specific facts and applicable law.
Why AI voice calls are covered
The statute restricts calls made using an artificial or prerecorded voice. A synthesized or cloned voice is artificial regardless of how convincing it sounds, and the FCC's 2024 declaratory ruling confirmed that reading.
Voice-cloning campaigns raise additional issues where the voice imitates a real person or an institution.
Documenting an AI call
Note anything that revealed the voice was synthetic: latency before responses, looping answers, an inability to answer an off-script question, or an admission when you asked directly whether you were speaking to a person.
